A beautiful suburb of Chicago, Northbrook is nestled on the northern border of Cook County. Although it has been a town for more than a century, Northbrook wasn’t always known by that name. Up until 1923, the area was known as Shermerville thanks to a man by the name of Frederick Schermer who helped to make sure the town’s train station could be built. What once was a considerably small town, Northbrook has grown continuously since the end of World War II. From 1950 to 1980 alone, the population of Northbrook skyrocketed from just over 3,000 residents to over 30,000.
Today, Northbrook is home to some of Illinois’ most visited parks and golf courses, including the perennially popular Wood Oaks Green Park, Crestwood Park, Brees Park, and Greenfield Park. When looking for things to do, most residents of Northbrook enjoy heading to the town’s Sports Center or Leisure Center. And, when it’s hot, nothing beats taking a dip in the Meadowhill Aquatic Center or cooling off near the Chicago River, which runs through the village. Consistently on lists for best places for families to raise kids in Illinois, Northbrook is a safe, family-oriented community.
Boasting some of the smartest kids in the state, in 1997 Northbrook 8th graders received the highest score in the entire world on a science test and the second highest score in the world on a math test. Because of the town’s accomplishments, President Bill Clinton personally visited the town to offer his congratulations to the hard-working students and staff at the local schools. Another claim to fame for the town: Several scenes in the popular movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off were actually filmed at the local Glenbrook North High School.
